Periodontal disease (gum disease), affects many people and often goes untreated until advanced stages because patients are embarrassed and under informed of treatment options. Periodontal disease is a disease that affects teeth and their supporting structures. During periodontitis (which means "inflammation around the tooth”) progression, the gums pull away from the teeth and form "pockets" that are infected. This infection is caused by bacteria in plaque that spreads and grows below the gum line which can harden over time and turn into calculus (tartar).
