Performance Analysis: King Kalakaua’s Poker Game

Introduction:
I went to see a play called King Kalakaua’s Poker Game at the Kumu Kahua theatre on Thursday June 5, 2003. The play turned out to be much more entertaining than I had expected. It was an interesting blend of truth and fiction and really brought me back to the time of King Kalakaua. The actors were very authentic and enjoyable, especially Wil Kahele who played the king.

Theme:
There are many possible themes to discuss in this play. I would like to explore the fact that guys need “poker night” as the theme of this play. Whether its poker, golf, hanging out at a bar, or tinkering with cars; guys need time away from the women in their lives. All of the guys in the play understood this except for Booth; he broke the no women rule by bringing Alice to the poker game. All of the guys were very mad with him for deceiving them. This leads to the end result where King Kalakaua does away with the no women rule to please Queen Kapiolani. The last scene...
