To Live or Die in Mexico City:
A Lesson in Reality
My story begins in November of 1992. I was working for Mrs. Fields Inc. as a specialist in research and development. This was a terrific position for a professional Chef who did not want to work in a traditional setting. I was able to actually explore my creativity, be artistic and call it work.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. I was informed by way of voice mail that our department (research and development) was to be downsized and that our projects must be finished by the end of November. This was devastating news. Who wants to look for a job right before Christmas? I opted to take my severance and file for unemployment, so I could “buy myself some time” to find a new position.
December came and I was out of a job for exactly four days. On the fifth day, my ex-boss phoned me and spoke to me of his new position with Mrs. Fields and how he had a new position for me in the international business div...
