On April 28th 2003, without any real warning, Pan Pharmaceuticals were transformed from market leader to industry recluse. The fall was swift and shook the very foundations of the pharmaceutical industry as well as all those involved. Pan pharmaceuticals, at their height, produced about 70% of Australia¡¦s vitamins and related products, supplied some of the countries biggest drug companies and claimed to be the largest independent contract maker of over-the-counter oral health care in the world and largest supplier of nutritional supplements in Australia.
On the Monday afternoon of April 28, the federal government¡¦s drug regulator, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), suspended Pan¡¦s license for 6 months, recalled 219 of their products and withdrew its approval to supply a further 1650 products for export.
