othello

1. The play ‘Othello’ is a Shakespearean tragedy but it is different to other play’s of its kind.
‘Othello’ is a domestic tragedy which only affects the immediate group of people involved. The hero Othello’s downfall arises from his hubris and hamartia. The tragic heroes in Shakespeare’s plays die because of a fault in their character. Othello has a very deadly flaw exposed by Iago, which is jealousy.
Othello’s hubris was his arrogance to do with jealousy, he denies that he is jealous and dismisses it.
“Think’ st thou I’d make a life of jealousy… Is once to be resolved”.
In the same speech he also says
“No, Iago, I’ll see before I doubt… away at once with love or jealousy”.
The catharsis is when Othello does the right thing at the end by killing himself and making a cleansing outcome to the play.
