Original writing

It was a dark and gloomy day in Normandy. A dismal layer of black cloud fell over the beach, as the soldiers sat in the landing crafts, hunched up with the cold. There was not a word spoken between them for a good ten minutes, and even eye contact was rare. It seemed that the men were absorbed in their own terrified thoughts, each one of them trying to come to terms with the horror which lay ahead.

An overpowering stench filled the air, a smell of vomit, cigarette smoke soggy clothes. And fear. Oh yes, you could smell pure fear. A man turned to his friend and vomited all over his already soggy uniform. The man was so deep in thought he did not flinch, or even acknowledge he had noticed. He just stared straight ahead. Another man struggled to control his shaking hands so he could twist the cap off his flask of whisky, so he could at least numb the fear. Another man was sat at the back quietly crying. This man was Joseph Cooper, and this was his first ex...
