You never get used to it. Never stop seeing your best mate’s face disappear as an enemy shell blasts it away in a split second.
Of course people think you’re crazy when for no reason you stare into space or burst out crying and shaking but what do they know? Have they experienced some of the horrors of war that I have? Do they realise that men selflessly gave up their future so that they could live in peace?
1944. Omaha beach. Orders – At all costs take over the beach. It seems like yesterday it’s so fresh in my mind. The absolute horror of the situation as thousands of men gave their lives for a few measly miles of beach. The words “Jump, get off we’re sinking,” still echo in my mind as I stand here washing the pots.
