MEANING OF MANAGEMENT

There are many differently worded definitions of management to be found, one of the definitions I came across in Richard L Daft, Management, Fourth Edition text book is “Management is the attainment of organizational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, leading, and controlling organisational resources.”

Mary Parker Follett described management as “the art of getting things done through people”, a simple but appropriate statement. Hence management can be seen as both art and science. It is the art of making people more effective than they would have been. The science is in how you do that.

According to Peter Drucker, “management is a practice rather than a science or a profession so there are no precise solutions, and the ultimate test of management is achievement and business performance”.
