Cacti
When most people think of cactus, they picture the three-armed giant grown only
in Arizona, but in the southwestern part of the United States, there are hundreds of
different cacti. They have gained popularity because of ‘zeroscaping’ (a type of
landscaping that requires small amounts of water to survive). Now that Colorado is going
through a severe drought, cacti is worth knowing about.
I. Cacti can be sub-divided into three sub-families: Pereskia, Opuntia Courst and
Cactus sub-family. There is so little difference between the family that is hard to
sub-divide. And to make things more confusing, any plant that can store large amounts of
water is called succulents. Since cactus stores water they are also succulents. The cactus
used in my experiment is the Opuntia Courst. This cactus is different from others because
it has individual segments, like little fingers.
