What do you learn about the period in which “Oliver Twist” was written and about Dickens’s choice of language?
Oliver Twist was treated badly by Mr Bumble. Oliver was fed by gruel and Mr Bumble thought that was a good enough meal, he thought that meat was bad for children to eat. “It’s meat, meat ma’am meat”. People thought that Oliver should have been scared of Mr Bumble this shows that Oliver was treated badly and that Oliver would be mad to talk back to him ”nobody in half his senses would venture to speak so to you”. Mr Bumble felt that he was doing Oliver a favour to let him have a life, even though he would have been better of without Mr Bumble ”It’s quite enough that we let’em have live bodies”.
