Off Mice and Men

George and Lennie were migrant farm workers who travelled from farm to farm in America, (California) during the 1930’s. This was an era in United States history called the Great Depression when jobs were very scarce and the agricultural was in dire straits because of the great dust storms of the Mid-West. Jobs the labourers would do included bucking hay bales and general farm work which involved hard physical labour. They were only paid $2.50 or $3.00 a day, which adds up to about $50.00 a month. Their jobs were short term because, once the boss of the ranch decides that he cannot pay all of the workers, or he thinks that there are too many workers, then he will just fire some of the workforce because he knows that later on he will get some other workers coming in looking for a job.
