Of Mice and Men


Women in 1937 were not considered equal to men. The women had

fewer rights and job opportunities than men. This essay will discuss

how Curley’s wife suffered from oppression through her marriage, power

and her image in the novel John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men.

Marriage is an important union between two people which is built on

trust. In this story Curley's wife and Curley were a married couple but lacked

this special bond. Curly was always suspicious of his playful wife. She was

desperate to have a companion on the ranch and reached out in a platonic

friendly way by admitting to Lennie how she has no love for Curley and is

very lonely.

Stereotyping expresses ideas about how people should act. Curley’s

wife was a prime example of a stereotypical character. Throughout the novel

Curley’s wife gets judged, name called and treated disrespectfully because
