Character Synopsis

George: George is the story's leading character, a sharp, quick man with well-defined features. George is a migrant ranch worker, he dreams of one day saving enough money to buy his own land; he would like to be self sufficient, be his own boss, live off of the fruits of his labour.

The encumbrance to his dream is his mentally handicapped companion, Lennie. George has known Lennie since the death of his Aunt Clara, who had been a friend of his, George has travelled with and worked with Lennie since Clara’s death and become almost like his guardian.

George devotes almost all his energy to looking after Lennie, whose blunders prevent George from working toward his dream, or even living the life of a normal rancher. Thus, George suffers a conflict within himself, he feels a duty to his friend Lennie, to whom he has the ties of long-time companionship but he so often yearns to break those ties in order to live the life of which he dreams.
