Of Mice And Men’

This essay will be on how well the tragedy in the last chapter of the novel ‘Of Mice And Men’ by John Steinbeck can be predicted.

The story is a representation of two drifters, George and Lennie, moving from place to place looking for a place to work. They have been from ranch to ranch, working a while at each one until Lennie’s uncontrollable behaviour causes trouble and forces the two to leave. The story is set during the great depression of the 1930’s.
The characters are introduced by the author in Chapter I entering the undisturbed ‘Garden of Eden’, which is filled with living creatures and beauty. “The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool.”

This beautiful scene is silent and peaceful until George and Lennie walk into it. “Rabbits come out of the brush to sit on the sand in the evening…” This is where we begin to see that this chapter and the final chapter are similar in ma...
