Oedipus Essay

Throughout the Greek tragedy Oedipus The King, Sophocles expresses his views on many ideas including fate, truthfulness, suffering, and life and death. He presents his ideas through the use of the characters and chorus in the play. One idea he addresses deals with the living a lie or learning the bitter truth. Through the use of characters Sophocles develops his ideas and shows why it is better to live a lie, by showing the suffering Oedipus deals with from learning the truth.
In most Greek tragedies the moral of the story is directed towards the audience. In Oedipus this is no different. Sophocles uses his characters to show his audience his ideas. He tries to develop the idea that living a lie is better than learning the bitter truth.
