Oedipus

Oral Presentation: Irony in Oedipus

Introduction:

In Sophocles’ "Oedipus Rex," literary elements are used throughout play to describe what is going on in the city of Thebes. Irony plays on the idea that we already know the story. In the beginning of the play, irony is used for humour, but by the end, as Oedipus learns his true identity the audience is meant to pity him. The downfall of Oedipus happened due to the determination of his character; this is amplified through the use of irony.

This type of irony is Dramatic Irony- when the audience or the reader knows more than the characters. The readers can possibly foresee what is going to happen a result from these quotations.
