Abstract


This research explores the prevalence of obesity in the United States, focusing on the alarming increase in prevalence among children and adolescents in the past several decades. At present there are approximately eight million young obese Americans in the U.S. It concentrates on the contributing factors leading to obesity that can be controlled, such as over-eating, high calorie intake with a lack of exercise or too little exercise, and high fat diets. Obesity is associated with an increase in several major health conditions; the one causing the most alarm is type II diabetes. This condition was rare among children but is now found in increasing numbers among the young. It has also been associated with an increase in mortality.
