Obesity

Nobody likes to diet. But most Americans need to. As the nation heads toward a new millennium, the disease that no one likes to talk about - has mushroomed into a major public health crisis. In fact, obesity has increased at Levels over the past decade, up from 26 percent of adults in 1980 to 34 percent today. As a result, over 58 million American adults-one third of the population-are overweight or obese. Even more alarmingly, childhood obesity rates have been rising steadily over the last three decades, with 22 percent of children ages 6 to 17 now overweight.
One of the recent trends in the American lifestyle suggest themselves contributors to recent trends in obesity: passive entertainment through television. In the American Journal of Public Health, Robert Jeffery and Simone French examined the association between TV viewing and body mass index.
