Northern Lights has all the ingrediants of a childrens classic - A child protagnist with a naive freshness of perception, a sense that the world that the grownups have created is unnesscarily twisted and cruel, all of these things united in a harrowing educative tale. However, Pullman manages to make his story a suprising and mature exploration if the nature of power politics, cultural differences, bereautic ideolgy and most importantly, the nature of the soul.
