When I first heard the title, Sacred Vessels, I imagined some giant clay pots and people were gathered to worship. In fact, this film is about ocean going vessels, their role in culture and traditions. It is a Moving Island production. The film is in two parts, both parts deal with the Micronesian islands but cover different roles of these “canoes” in two very different settings. The first part deals with Polowat, a very traditional and to some people old world community. Many of the traditions still practiced, date back for hundreds of years. Here, two brothers, Celestino and Sosthenis Emwalu carry on a tradition of canoe building. The other half of the film focuses on Rob Limtiaco of Guam. Limtiaco is set in a western society, where much of the traditional culture has died.
