Noa Noa

When Paul Gaugin left on his voyage to Tahiti. He had clear vision of what a Tahitian person would be. He expected fearless people with wild abandoned, almost a type of modern day thrill seeker. Is that what Gaugin found when he arrived in Tahiti? Was it possible that Gaugin was looking for something within himself, which no matter where he went the people could not provide him? These possibilities will be examined throughout the paper.
When Gaugin arrived in Tahiti he expected to find a certain type of culture. His view of the Tahitian people was stereotypical, which was expected from a typical European. The problem with this was, Gaugin was not your typical European. He despised European culture. “I was disgusted by all this European triviality” (Gaugin, p.3). Gaugin was looking for freedom probably to help expanded his art.
