Envision yourself beneath a rock unable to move, completely at the mercy of nature. You are blinded, tied in chains forged by lies; you exist only to serve and reproduce. You are a Woman. For centuries women have been used, abused, treated slightly above beasts of burden. Women had no rights and were considered ‘property’, there were instances in the past and tragically in the present where women are sold for currency. In the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Hurston, the same idea prevailed, the idea that life was controlled by the man and the female stood in the shadows. This way of life is dubbed as patriarchal, and throughout the novel this is displayed time and time again by the way the main character, Janie, is influenced by government, society, and common social interactions.
