No Death Penalty

            The death penalty utilized in most states proves ineffective, heinous in character and frequently flawed. Since reinstating the death penalty in 1973 there have been 103 people pardoned from death. This fact alone should show that something is wrong with the system. Before leaving office Governor George Ryan commuted all but three death row inmates to life sentences and the three other inmates to shorter sentences. Ryan responded with "We have evidence from four men, who did not know each other, all getting beaten, tortured, and convicted on the basis of the confessions they allegedly provided". These victims were arrested and then forced to give confessions so that the police force of Chicago, Illinois would seem like a group of heroes for the citizens. Many Illinois citizens supported Ryan's decision, hoping it would lead to a nation wide movement towards the abolition of the death penalty
