Night

In the text Night, what changes Elie from the devout believer is at the beginning to the spiritually empty person he is at the end?

Throughout the novel Night, Elie changes from a person who is a strong believer in his religion, one who has an aspiration to study the Jewish texts of mysticism such as the Talmud and the cabbala, to a person who has very little faith left following the horrific events that occur in the concentration camps, and the fact that he can’t understand nor accept God’s silence on these events also contributes to his loss of faith.


Many things contribute to Elie’s loss of faith, but the biggest thing is probably the fact that he can’t understand why God would abandon him, his family, and all his fellow Jews. Throughout the text Elie constantly questions why God is putting the Jews through these horrible conditions, yet he never seems to find an answer.
