NHL HISTORY

The National Hockey League (NHL) is the oldest and most diverse hockey league of all time. Hockey came from the sport field hockey. Like in field hockey they use curved sticks but in a larger form. The NHL is Eighty-Five years old and most of the players are Canadian. British soldiers stationed in Kingston, Ontario and Halifax N.S developed modern ice hockey in the mid-1850s.
In 1879 rules were set by students at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and several amateur clubs and leagues were established in Canada by the late 1880s. Ice hockey became extremely popular at northern U.S. colleges in the late 1800s, and by the beginning of the 20th century the sport had spread to Britain and other parts of Europe.
The most important development of the 1890’s is that when Frederick Arthur, Lord Stanley of Preston, paid ten guineas (about $50) for a silver mug. It would be awarded to Canada’s top amateur hockey team. Which ever team won the Stanle...
