This article reveals that verbal abuse has a much greater impact on the victims’ self-worth than physical attacks. In school settings it was discovered that name-calling can significantly reduce self-esteem. Dr. Stephen Joseph, a psychologist at the University of Warwick, did the research on what name-calling does to a child’s self esteem. The study assessed 331 school students in England and showed that about 40 percent were bullied some time in their schooling. Bullied children may suffer from a posttraumatic stress, so really instead of toughening up the student bullying affects their mental health.
