In many books written over the years, the are some characters which tend to remind you of characters you have read about in previous books. Some of these characters are so close to the same, you have a problem distinguishing one from the other. In the short stories Everyday Use and I Stand Here Ironing, the mother’s impact on their daughters were similar but also different.
The mothers in both short stories saw very similar characteristics in their daughters’ upbringing. The mother in I Stand Here Ironing felt regret over having to send Emily away and not being with her during the most important part of her life. The mother in Everyday Use felt regret because Dee had not been quite like the rest of the family because she was allowed to grow too easily into her own person. Furthermore, both mothers were uneducated. In I Stand Here Ironing this lack of education led to the mother having to work more and be with her child less.
