The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Incorporated was formed in 1941. It was formed by already-existing electric cooperatives in the state of South Carolina so they could have representation in the General Assembly and to provide services that they could better receive by pooling their resources. Fred Cole is now the presiding president of the Cooperatives. The ECSC is a collective representative in most affairs affecting the individual cooperatives of South Carolina, such as legal services, government relations, employee safety, advertising, and insurance services.
Electrical utilities in the state of South Carolina are assigned specific territories by law. This prevents the unnecessary duplication of electrical facilities which would increase the cost of services to the consumer by paying for unneeded expenses.
