Music that Speaks of Society

The United States moved rapidly from an agrarian society directly into an industrial society in the early 1900’s. In doing so people began to interact with other according to their achieved status rather than their ascribed status. In many ways society did not “go quietly in to that goodnight.”( ) The song Rich Girl written by Daryl Hall and John Oats speaks to the role conflict that confesses not only an individual but of an entire society.
The entire piece is about a girl born to money. (Patty Hurst) Ms. Patty Hurst was kidnapped and held for ransom by a group called Symbionese Liberation Army (S.L.A.). The S.L.A. was an American based terrorist group. This negotiated order had a motto of “Death to the fascist insect that preys upon the people.”
After being kidnapped Patty Hurst relied on her father’s money to bail her out of her situation. The S.L.A. required the donation of six million dollars worth of food to the ...
