Multiculturalism in Canada is an unrealistic ambition. The issues surrounding the ism of multiculturalism are addressed in Himani Bannerji's The Other Family. The story examines the key issues clearly and accurately. One of the key issues worth
examining is the always present idea of racism. Racism occurs in every person everyday. Another issue is assimilation. People who immigrate to Canada will eventually, whether they like it or not, attain some of the dominant culture's traits and pastimes.
Multiculturalism creates cultural tension and separation. Cultures are being pulled farther and farther apart, rather than what it is attempting to an unrealistic world with all cultures living as one in happy unison.
