“Mountain Lion”


“Mountain Lion” by D.H. Lawrence is an excellent poem about the poet walking along a snow-covered mountain in Mexico. He comes across two strangers who have killed a lion and are taking it home with them as a trophy. However the poet doesn’t agree and doesn’t think the lion should have been killed. The poet eventually finds the cave where the lion lived and felt that the earth could spare a few million humans, but that the lion didn’t have to die. This poem, I feel, would be good for future S3 classes.

One of the reasons I think it should be used for future classes is because of its excellent language. He uses repetition well, especially in the third stanza of the poem. This stanza is telling us of their situation,
“They hesitate.
We hesitate.
They have a gun.
We have no gun.”
This helps to show that it is a tense and awkward situation and the use of short sentences helps to highlight this it’s also tense because of the fact that the oth...
