Motivation

Motivation theories are divided into two broad and opposing groups, each dominated by a different philosophical perspective on human nature. Behaviourist theories
Cognitive theories

The underlying concept of motivation is some driving force within individuals by which they attempt to achieve some goal in order to fulfill some need or expectation.

People’s behaviour is determined by what motivates them. Their performance is a product of both ability level and motivation (Mullins 1996)

Performance = function (ability x motivation). The factors are multiplied - thus if either ability or motivation is zero, then performance is zero.

There are two types of motivation

Extrinsic motivation (comes from outside the individual) is related to tangible rewards such as salary promotion and condition of work.

Intrinsic motivation (comes from inside the individual) is related to psychological rewards such as opportunity to use one’s ability, positive reco...
