Montana 1948 Summary of pages 52-151

As David was making his way back to the ranch from his ride, he noticed his father and uncle arguing near the riverbank. David inched closer without being noticed to observe what was going on. He was not able to hear however; he assumed they were discussing Marie’s accusations. David had some brief passing thoughts about shooting his uncle and ending all of the pain associated with his uncle’s actions. David’s hands were shaking so badly holding the gun; he put it away knowing that he never would have been able to fire a shot. He stayed long enough to see them both walking back to the ranch knowing things were OK for he time being.

When the family arrived back home from the ranch, Marie seemed to be feeling much better. The next day David went fishing with his friends, only to come home to hear that Marie had been murdered in her bed.
