Modern politics and public life are about the “management of visibility” (Thompson 134) and the mobilisation of public opinion.

In recent times, the view of the world as a global village has taken hold. Globalisation and the formation of regional economies such as the European Union (EU) and the Association of South-east Asian Nations (ASEAN) have consolidated the political structure. Furthermore, the events of September 11, 2001 and October 12, 2002 have brought the world together to face a common problem. New York and Bali were just the beginning of an international instability that persists till today. The problem of Islamic extremism and the US led global war on terrorism have come to monopolise almost all global discussions. Security has become the primary issue on everyone’s lips and the spotlight has fallen on the Islamic world to prove itself to be a religion of peace.
