Misery
Anton Chekhov was one of the most brilliant short story writers of his time in (1886). He wrote stories about the lives of everyday people. In our fast paced world, many of us are too busy to be aware or concerned about the sorrows of other people. Chekhov’s short story “Misery” epitomizes this situation. Misery is manifested through out the story, not only by the character of Iona, but also the other characters and the setting itself. The setting is described from the beginning of the story. Misery is evident.
Sadness and gloom are felt in the beginning of the short story “Misery.” The author was born in Russia and is recreating a harsh winter night with wet snow blowing about the street lamps. The darkness gives the reader a feeling of depression and loneliness. The snow is used to give the reader a sense of cold and bitterness. The dreary setting intensifies the emotions that Iona is feeling inside from the loss of his son.
