In 1963 an 18- year old girl was raped and kidnaped in Phoenix, Arizona. Police started their investigation into this crime and found the suspect. Ernesto Miranda was a 23- year old Mexican-American who was arrested for the crime. After the police questioned him for two hours he finally confessed to kidnaping and raping the 18 - year old girl. Miranda was never told what his rights as an American citizen were and police were able to take advantage of the fact that not everyone knew what their rights were. According to amendment number five all foreigners who are arrested have certain rights that should be explained to them at the time of arrest.(www.geocities.com).
This landmark case of Miranda vs. Arizona was a U.S. Supreme court case which resulted in a ruling that specified a code of conduct for police interrogations of criminal suspects held in custody.
