Miranda, the role of woman upon society at the time, or just the necessary woman to enable to play to succeed?

Obviously Shakespeare could have easily used one of the two options in his play. It was a very patriarchal society at the time, men ruled over woman, this shows in the play as there is only one woman on show, everyone else is a male, or a creature, again referring to a sign of the times, a vast amount more men to woman, even on an island. However, there is two sides to every argument, Shakespeare was a very clever, accomplished writer, surely he had the part of Prospero’s daughter before he thought about society? Or did he? Miranda is a very important role in the play, the character has significance, the following quote shows this;
