The state has a few different nicknames. They are: North Star State, Gopher State, Land of 10,000 Lakes and the Bread and Butter State. Minnesota got its name from two Sioux Indian words meaning sky-tinted water or cloudy water.
Minnesota's state flag bears a version of the state seal. The state seal was adopted in 1861. On the seal a man plowing symbolizes agriculture and a tree stump stands for the lumber industry, both are important parts of the state's history.
