Mind Games

It was there, right in front of her, it’s hot, glaring red eyes staring. Hand outstretched, it made a terrible noise – somewhere between a hungry grunt and a growling hiss. He bent his knees, ready to pounce on his helpless victim. Megan tried to move her legs, anything to get away. Then everything blurred. Something was shaking her arm. She screamed; a long, loud piercing scream.

Megan woke up with a start. The light flickered on and her mother rushed in.
“It’s alright, it’s alright, I’m here.”
She walked over and stood by the bed.
“I’m sorry mum,” Megan sobbed, “I could have sworn that he was right there.”
She glanced up at her mum through bloodshot eyes. Neither of them had got much sleep in days, and both looked pale and withdrawn. Megan could tell that her mother couldn’t take much more. After a moment of silence, Megan spoke.
“I’m okay now mum really, you go back to bed.”
“You’re sure you’re alright?”
“I’m fine,...
