The Triple entente: Britain, France and Russia (formed in 1907). 2. The Triple alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy (formed in 1882) • Each member promised to help its allies if they were attacked by a country from the other alliance. • Britain was concerned about: 1. Germany’s growing iron and steel industry. 2. Germany’s growing empire (colonies). 3. Germany’s growing navy (naval race) • France wanted revenge on Germany as it had won Alsace and Lorraine (two important French industrial regions) in a previous war. • Germany was jealous of England’s empire and wealth. • Russia rivalled with Austria-Hungary for more land and influence on the Balkans area. • Bosnia in Austria-Hungary was occupied by many Serbians.
