“A Room With A View” by E.M. Forster not only introduces social pressure, but

also shows how to overcome them. For instance, Lucy’s trip to Italy opened her eyes to

ideas and people unlike those she had known growing up in the English countryside. Lucy

was only how she was brought up to be, but only because she didn’t know any different. She

also noticed how freely Italian classes seemed to mix, and realized that the social boundaries

that she had regarded as fixed are not quite so. Her experience with the Emersons showed
