From the very first time Chief Justice Harlan Fiske Stone entered office, it was known that he was in favor of the minority decision.
Justice Stone was born on October 11, 1872 in Chesterfield, New Hampshire. Justice Stone graduated from Colombia Law School in 1898. He was admitted into the bar in 1899. Colombia Law School hired him as a professor in 1902 and Justice Stone eventually became dean in 1910.
Justice Stone was appointed to associate justice by college friend and President Coolidge in 1925. Stone, who was a republican, is only one of two justices to be appointed by a president of the opposite party. Justice Stone became the 12th Chief Justice of the United States when he was appointed to the position in 1941 by Franklin Roosevelt. Stone is one of only five justices to be appointed to chief after being an associate justice.
