the fall of the western empire with the sack of rome in 476 a.c.e. is traditional landmark date for the beginning of the middle ages and the decline in civilization. as with most attempts to date historical periods some of the elements of decline began several centuries before and aspects of roman civilization would last throughout the so called middle ages and revive in the early moden period of history.
