Media affecting women

Mirror, Mirror, On the Wall…

When I look at myself in the mirror I don’t see the same image that is posted on the cover of Cosmo or Seventeen, acting in movies and television or walking down the runway for a swimsuit modeling show. Media portrays women having a set appearance in order to be considered “beautiful.” In order to be beautiful in America we have to be thin, to the point where we have no fat on our stomachs, no curves in our hips, protruding neck lines and long slender legs that are supposed to gracefully carry our bodies. Realistically, only the cover models for Cosmo, Victoria Secret’s models, Lakers’ girls, and pop starts such as Britney Spears manage to have this “perfect” all-American body type. Women are targeted and influenced by the media and society’s standards in order to have the optimal body image; and in the process causing stress, pain and torture for women who attempt to succeed in accomplishing this unrealistic goal.
