Ethnic Groups and Ethnicity

Ethnic Group – Individuals that share certain beliefs, values, habits, costumes and norms because of their common background.
o Define themselves as different and special b/c of cultural features (eg. Language, religion, etc)
o Some characteristics may include a collective name, beliefs in common decent, a sense of solidity and an association with a specific territory.
Ethnicity – means the identification with, and feeling a part of, an ethnic group and exclusion from certain other groups b/c of this affiliation.
o These feelings can alter with relation to time and countries
Subcultures…
o Are groups within a culture that have different learning experiences as well as shared ones
o Individuals often have more than one group identity.
Status – a position in which someone fits into in society
o Ascribed status – people who have little or no choice ...
