Maurice Ravel

Maurice Ravel’s mother, Maurie Delouart and father, Joseph Ravel, met in Spain in the year of 1873. They were married in 1874 and had their first child, Maurice in the year 1875. Maurice was born in the Basses-Pyrenees town, but soon after he was born his family moved to Paris. Joseph Ravel was just an engineer, and an amateur painter, but he encouraged his son to study music at an early age. Even though Ravel was brought up in Paris, Ravel was always close to his Basque heritage.
At the young age of seven Ravel began his first piano lesson by Henri Ghys. Five years later he began studying harmony with Delibes’ pupil Charles-Rene. Ravel attempted to start producing compositions. They included; variations on a chorale by Schumann, variations on a theme from Grieg’s Peer Gynt and a sonata movement.
