The poet:
-He is a 19th century poet and critic who share with Tennyson many ideas about the social function of art. Nevertheless he has some differences and it articulates him as a realistic poet.

-The differences between the two poets:
Tennyson is an idealism poet and he is greatly influenced by the Romantic Movement. This is seen through the use of his vocabulary and figures of speech. By contrast Arnold is realistic poet. The colorful world of Tennyson does not seem to appeal to Arnold although he shares with Tennyson the moral massage of art.

-Arnold believes in the moral and social responsibilities of man towards his society and culture; which are closely related to each other. The job of the artist according to him is to beined society to its culture and therefore to its identity.

-Arnold is a critical of the anarchists; we see that in his book ''Culture and Anarchy''. In it he criticizes the English middle class, in which he calls them philistines.
