Materialism of the Wealthy

Materialism is the theory that matter is the reality. The wealthy have always been associated with materials, and believing that they are important. This life is surrounded by big, fancy, houses and bright, shiny cars. This also represents a life where dreams are reality and reality is a dream. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, symbolism such as gold, green and white are repeatedly displayed throughout the novel to develop the theme of materialism of the wealthy.
The colors, gold and yellow represent wealth, respect and triumph of the American dream. Gatsby’s house shows exactly what he has and nothing less. “His [Gatsby] bedroom was the simplest room of all- except where the dresser was garnished with a toilet set of pure dull gold”(97). Gatsby uses everything he has to show that he has conquered the American dream. He purchases material of pure gold to show off his riches and hard work. He thinks that purchasing gold materials will lead him to his unconquer...
