Masks

Playing games or putting on masks is a way of protecting ourselves from the hurt we think might result if we are rejected when someone discovers our true self.

Whatever mask we put on, we are expressing our feelings of inadequacy. Usually it is the mask we wear that is unlikable, not us, and people are not aware of our insecurity and misjudge us. In this way, wearing masks is a self-defeating exercise, because it keeps people from knowing us as we are and making their own self-assesment of our worth.
