A Misunderstood Queen: Mary, Queen of Scots
On December 8, 1542, James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise celebrated the birth of their child Mary Stuart. The child was destined to inherit the crown, and her destiny became reality at the premature age of only 6 days old (Spangler 551). Mary became queen of Scots due to the death of James V death. It was from then on that Mary lived by the motto; “ ’In the end is my beginning’,” given to her by her mother (Morrison 11). Most people in Scotland believed that her reign would fail and in a desperate attempt to preserve Scotland Mary of Guise protected Mary’s throne (Spangler 551).
A young heir was easily influenced, resulting in conflicts concerning who would be in charge of Mary’s regency. One of the people who desired her regency was James Hamilton, the second earl of Arran.
